Seattle Neighborhood Spotlights: West Seattle

Posted by on Apr 16, 2019 in Blog

You might not know this, but West Seattle was the original Seattle. Could you imagine the Space Needle and downtown high-rises a few miles southwest of where they are now?! It almost happened! We often mention the story of how the Denny Party settled West Seattle in 1851 on our Duck Tours. What they soon found is that it didn’t make for the best city (they needed a deeper bay and better tides) so they moved across Elliott Bay to build Seattle where it stands today. West Seattle still has a lot to offer, especially when it comes to its gorgeous coastline, so make sure to check out the following on your trip: Alki Beach You won’t need palm trees for the ultimate seaside experience when you visit Alki Beach. In the summer you’ll find locals sunbathing, swimming and lounging on the driftwood along the sand. Check out the restaurants across the street for local seafood and a beautiful glimpse across the water. Easy Street Records This independent record store got its start in 1988 after two older music stores merged into one. You can shop for vinyl before or after you pop into their in-house café for coffee and a bite to eat. They often host live musicians,...

Seattle Neighborhood Spotlights: Downtown

In almost any city you’ll find the bustling heart of Downtown is the main financial and shopping hub. The same can be said for Seattle… except that we’re SO much more than just a blur of people and cars! Stroll a few blocks in each direction to discover what makes our city so unique. There’s bound to be a coffee shop every few storefronts. Craving sushi? Maybe Italian? There’s a restaurant for that just a short walk away! Museums, markets, and even Ferris wheels are all within walking distance of each other. From big-name brands that got their start here (like Nordstrom!) to boutiques you’ll love, discover the style that’s right for you. While you’ll enjoy getting lost on the many streets and alleyways of our city, make sure to take your time to enjoy these well-known Seattle attractions that call the Downtown neighborhood their home: 1) Pike Place Market One of the nation’s oldest farmer’s markets, Pike Place Market is a great place to eat, shop for souvenirs and take plenty of photos to show people back home! They’re also famous for their beautiful flower arrangements and local art. 2) Gum Wall Speaking of Pike Place, there’s a very famous wall that’s part of Post Alley located right...

How to Pack and Dress for Seattle Weather

Posted by on Mar 8, 2019 in Blog

If you’re reading this, you’re hopefully excited about your upcoming trip to Seattle, and why wouldn’t you be with so many amazing things to see here (like on our land and water tours!) You might be asking yourself questions like, “What’s the weather like in Seattle? How does a typical Seattleite dress? Is there anything else I should bring to make myself more comfortable on my trip there?” First, we’ve got to clear up this whole “it’s always raining in Seattle” thing. Did you know Seattle is actually 41st in annual average rainfall in the US? Crazy! It may be a bit gray and drizzly x days a year, but there are also many dry and sunny days. The weather is actually mild all year long meaning it doesn’t get too hot or cold. People in Seattle are very casual – this isn’t a place where the sidewalk doubles as a designer catwalk! To stay comfy during certain times of the year, our helpful tips are: Spring Flowers will be blooming and birds will be singing! Temperatures from April to June hover between 55°f-65°f (13°c-18°c). During the spring, the rain could go either way, so be sure to plan for it! You should consider bringing: A light to medium...

When you hear the words “Music City” you might think of the country stars of Nashville or young musicians living in LA striving for fame. But did you know that Seattle has a long history with producing some of the best rock, grunge and guitar superstars? Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, Macklemore, Foo Fighters, Fleet Foxes, and Death Cab for Cutie all span different genres and all originated in this amazing city we call home (trust us- this list isn’t close to including all of Seattle’s amazing artists).
